Slows aging and extends life
Not studiedLifespan and healthspan extended only in worms, mice and monkeys [5]. In humans, there is no intervention study on aging; the assumed decline of taurine with age was not confirmed in several cohorts [6][7].[6][7]
More endurance and performance
Small benefitTwo meta-analyses found small to moderate effects (g 0.40 and 0.25, respectively); the certainty of evidence is low to very low [8][9].[8][9]
Lowers blood pressure
Small benefitRCT in prehypertension: office systolic blood pressure −7.2 vs. −2.6 mmHg with placebo [10]; meta-analysis: systolic about −4 mmHg, diastolic about −1.5 mmHg [11].
Better blood glucose and blood lipid values
Small benefitMeta-analysis of 25 RCTs: small reduction in fasting glucose and triglycerides, no effect on HDL cholesterol [11].
Better concentration and mental performance
No benefitMeta-analysis of seven RCTs with 402 participants: no significant effects on cognitive scores [12].
Mechanism of action
Evidence map: Taurine
Taurine is regarded as conditionally essential in humans; cells without taurine show pronounced disturbances. A review describes functions in antioxidation, energy metabolism, gene expression, ER stress, neuromodulation and calcium homeostasis and mentions the approval for the treatment of heart failure in Japan [1]. In human and bovine mitochondrial tRNAs, taurine is incorporated directly into modified uridines (5-taurinomethyluridine); this modification is missing in mutated tRNAs in the mitochondrial diseases MELAS and MERRF [2]. Mice lacking the taurine transporter (TauT) lose almost all taurine in heart and skeletal muscle; their endurance on the treadmill was reduced by more than 80%, while heart function was largely preserved [3]. After oral administration in eight healthy men, taurine reached its peak plasma concentration after about 1.5 hours, and the elimination half-life was about one hour [4].
The debate about taurine as an aging factor goes back to a 2023 study in Science: there, blood taurine declined with age in mice, monkeys and humans; taurine supplementation extended healthy lifespan and lifespan in mice and healthy lifespan in monkeys, and reduced cellular senescence, DNA damage and inflammation. In humans, there were only associations: lower levels went along with several age-related diseases [5]. A follow-up paper in Science, by contrast, found constant or rising taurine levels with age in three cohorts as well as in monkeys and mice, measured longitudinally and cross-sectionally, and inconsistent associations with health measures [6]. In 137 men aged 20 to 93 years, blood taurine was related neither to age nor to muscle mass, strength, performance or mitochondrial function [7].
For performance, a meta-analysis of ten studies shows a small to moderate benefit for endurance (Hedges g 0.40) [8]; a more recent meta-analysis of 23 randomized studies of single doses found a small effect (g 0.25) with low to very low certainty of evidence [9]. In an RCT with 120 people with prehypertension, taurine lowered blood pressure in office and long-term measurement and improved vasodilation; in the laboratory, it dampened TRPC3-mediated calcium influx in arteries [10]. A meta-analysis of 25 RCTs with mixed populations found small reductions in blood pressure, fasting glucose and triglycerides [11], and a meta-analysis of seven RCTs found no effect on cognition [12]. In mice and in cells from people with acute myeloid leukemia, leukemia stem cells use taurine from the bone marrow via TauT; inhibiting TauT slowed leukemia growth [13].

Risks and warnings
Tolerability
In a meta-analysis of 25 RCTs, adverse effects were not significantly more frequent with taurine than in the control groups [11]. Long-term data beyond one year are lacking.
Human, randomised
Theoretical: leukemia
In mice and in patient cells, taurine from the bone marrow promoted the growth of myeloid leukemias via TauT [13]. Whether supplemented taurine influences the risk in humans has not been studied.

Open questions
- Does blood taurine fall with age in humans, or does that depend on the cohort and measurement method?
- Does taurine supplementation extend healthy lifespan in humans? Intervention studies are lacking.
- How large is the blood pressure effect in people with normal blood pressure?
- Does the leukemia finding matter for intake from outside the body?
